Kuroyukihime explaining the color system to Haruyuki

In the Accel World, Burst Linkers each have their own avatar that is unique to the Linker. Each variant has its own unique strengths and weaknesses as well it would seem their own style. These traits are represented by the color of the Burst Linker's avatar, allowing other players to gauge the their opponent's skills based off their complexion.

Accel World v10 008

Color Wheel

Seven Pure Colors

The seven first colors to have reached level nine seemed to also be the most dominant within the Accel World, with the exception of the black color. These colors reside in a specific domain, ruled by the Six Kings of Pure Color and share specific traits with each other.

Black

Not much is known about the black-colored avatars, due there being only two known examples, Black Lotus and Black Vise.

According to Black Lotus, the Black color renders stuns, snares and ect. However, it could also simply be a part of Lotus's skills alone and not true for all black-colored avatars.

Blue

Blue-colored avatars specialize in close combat, making them the polar opposite of the red-colored. Most of the blue-colored avatars are very straight-forward in battle, although there exist exceptions, as is the case with Cyan Pile.

Examples:

Green

Citron Call

Lime Bell's Citron Call

Green avatars are a combination of the colors yellow and blue, making them capable of both close and indirect combat. Green avatars are renown for their high defensive abilities, with the Green King even being renown as "indestructible". In battle, green avatars focus more on tanking hits and wearing down the opponent gradually, either through their amazing defense or through means of recovery, as is the case with Lime Bell.

Examples:

Purple

Purple Avatars sacrifice their defensive capabilities in favor of both long- and close-ranged combat abilities. This renders them very lethal in battle, evident by Dusk Taker being able to completely overwhelm the combined efforts of Silver Crow and Cyan Pile.

Examples:

Red

Scarlet Rain's Immobile Fortress

Scarlet Rain's "Immobile Fortress"

Red avatars specialize in long-range fighting, as mentioned by the Red King in her duel with Haruyuki[1]. According to Kuroyukihime, before Scarlet Rain rose to the top, Crimson Kingbolt was the strongest avatar in terms of long-ranged firepower.[2]

Examples:

White

Not much is known about the white-colored avatars, due there being only three known examples, White Cosmos, Ivory Tower and Ardor Maiden. It should be noted that White Cosmos is strictly speaking the only healing-type avatar in the entire Accel World.[3]

Yellow

Silly-Go-Round2

Silver Crow trapped in the Yellow King's illusion

The yellow variants of a Burst Linker avatar specialize in indirect attacks, ranging from beast taming[2] to missile jamming and illusions[4]. Even though they deal no direct damage, these techniques can be very potent, as demonstrated by the Leader of the Yellow Legion, Yellow Radio, whose illusions were enough to render Scarlet Rain, Cyan Pile and Silver Crow unable to do anything.[4]

Examples:

Other Variants

Besides the seven main colors, other types of avatars are known to exist in the Accel World. They are typically viewed as a rare occurrences and often possess unique abilities.

Elemental

Aqua Current

Aqua Current's appearance

Instead of being dyed a certain color, some avatars within the Accel World seem to be composed of a certain element instead. There are only four known examples of this, namely the group known as the Elements, once lead by Black Lotus. It seems that the elements composing the body of the avatar are incarnated in their purest form, shown when Aqua Current could negate Nickel Doll's electric attack entirely due to her body being the 'perfect insulator'. Elemental avatars can also freely alter the size and shape of their bodies.[5]

Metallic

Silver Crow

Silver Crow

Metallic avatars are of a different brand than normally-colored ones, possessing their own color chart divided between precious and common metals. Metallic colors are known for their resilience, with precious metals being resistant to abnormal status effects like poison and element attacks like fire and common metals enduring physical attacks easily.

Examples:

Exceptional Cases

Takumu Mayuzumi

Lightning Cyan Spike

Cyan Pile's Pile Driver

Although possessing a blue-colored avatar and thus specializing in close combat, Cyan Pile's avatar possesses the weapon Pile Driver, which is in fact a long-range weapon. This unique development was due to Takumu being bullied by the seniors of his Kendo Club during elementary school, where they would hit him on the throat with a shinai, similar to the way Takumu's Pile Driver operates. After being trained to utilize the Incarnate System, Takumu was able to transform the Pile Driver into a weapon more suitable for close combat, the Cyan Blade.[6]
